I am convinced that my transmission is a sentient being! You never know how it is going to be. Will it be a pile of cole or will it shift like butter! You never know! So do any of you have any idea what could be wrong with it? I think it might be the transmission fluid.

Try changing it and see if that helps it :p

When is the last item you changed the fluid?

Not enough information. All automatic's have a mind of their own, either a fluid or electronic based computer. But don't change the fluid if you never did, and it's black and smelly, or it will die.

It's a manual though.

Change the hell out of that fluid. I am changing my tranny oil at 9K miles, just because I fell like the OEM one is crap.

You fooled me when you said fluid rather than oil, though some fords used ATF in manuals. Check the linkage, both clutch and shifter, and clean and grease if necessary. Check the oil in the trans.

Is it a Japanese, German or American manual?

Could you possibly have a clutch problem...that is to say, if the clutch is not engaging properly, fully, or correctly, it may cause your shift linkage and/or your transmission to seem, well, sick or odd, or out of sync, or out of gear, or just not quite right, exactly like your post states?

Put your friends on.

YourStereotypicalIndian 's friends: OEM Fluids are utter shit for the most part. Another reason to change your fluids after putting on the first few thousand is the break in period. You don't want that shit causing excess wear. And finally, aftermarket parts and fluids exist for a reason, THEY ARE MOSTLY BETTER.

That should help.

From a Mechanical Engineer.

The clutch was replaced at a BMW dealership about a year ago though so I doubt that's it.

From one Mechanical Engineer to another. . . I agree. Although, I am a ME student.

I am going to see if my local shop has some oil I am looking for, otherwise online it is!

Change is not necessary good. Frequent changes or no changes for Automatic's, for manuals, nasty oil may require two changes, possibly thicker oil, or gear molly if high mileage. On the other hand I've got synthetic gear oil in the German cars, and they are better behaved. It depends on what it is, and how it has been used, as sometimes the solution to neglect is more neglect.

Search on the forums to see what people use. On the Miatas, if you don't use Ford MTF fluid it shifts like crap in anything but warm sunny weather. That's what is recommended on the forums.

Definitely change the fluid. Before I changed mine, cold temps would prevent it from getting into gear. Changed the fluid with Amsoil Synthetic and it was the greatest feeling through the shifter. Probably a good time to change the rear diff, and if you have one, the transfer case fluid.

Change the fluid first, then check the clutch mechanism if you still have problems. My car shifted like butter after I changed the transmission fluid earlier this year, but I recently had to replace a hydraulic line and the clutch slave cylinder and ever since, it had either been very easy to extremely hard to get it in gear.

You said it's a manual, so read up on your make/model's forum and see if anyones used the GM/ACDelco Friction Modified MT Fluid. It not only generally improved shift action, but that shit worked wonders on my 3rd gear synchro issues. Make sure there are many many documented cases of it working well, like for my TL-S. Don't want to reduce the life of your trans by using the wrong stuff.

Well I saw a lot of people talking about redline fluid. Though I'll look again.
